OpenSolaris Governance Proposal (DRAFT 00)

Abstract

OpenSolaris is an organization dedicated to the collaborative production of open source software for a family of commercial-grade operating systems. OpenSolaris is organized into communities responsible for products, architecture boards (ARCs) responsible for multi-product interfaces, and a Community Advisory Board (CAB) responsible for maintaining this organization via allocation of Communities and ARCs and handling exceptions as they arise. OpenSolaris communities are self-governed by a meritocratic system wherein sustained contributions lead to decision-making authority and responsibility for continuous community development. This document defines how OpenSolaris shall govern itself via a common set of policies and procedures designed to promote collaborative development.

Status of this Document

This document is a draft that has not been approved by anyone, not even the original author(s), and is published here for the sake of collaborative authoring. You are welcome to send comments to the CAB, but please don't expect a response until we have a chance to generate a complete snapshot for more formal comments.

To Do List

Drafting a governance proposal is an iterative process that will take time to complete. This section will help the editors keep track of what has been discussed but not yet done.

1. Please insert comments in bold text, including the commenter name.
2. When consensus is clear, any CAB member can fix the draft accordingly.
3. Go to 1 until there are no more changes pending.
4. Send initial draft to community for comments.
5. Go to 1 until the CAB is satisfied that the comments have either been satisfied or at least been addressed (consensus is not always possible).
6. Submit governance proposal to OpenSolaris citizens for ratification.

sch: Although it may be depressingly formal, I think the document needs a more
ordered structure, where the order is in terms of the introduced entities and
their interactions.
