OGB Futures Discussion
Based on John Plocher's discussions with Jeb Dasteel of Oracle, the OGB's options seem to be:
- Do Nothing: Wait to see what Oracle will decide to do with our community sometime in the future,
- Do Something: Work (somehow) to revitalize our existing community in the face of Oracle's public apathy, or
- Force the Issue: Disband the OGB, trigger the Constitution's board dissolution clause and officially give control and direction of the OpenSolaris Community back to Oracle
John described the content of his conversation with Jeb. The bottom line is that Oracle don't have any information to pass on and that they'd like us to wait a couple of months before we make any moves to disband. The vacuum that's been created through lack of dialog is leading to stagnation and allowing rumor mills to run riot.
Simon then discussed the options available to the OGB. For whatever reason the possibility of a co-development effort between Oracle and the OpenSolaris Community does not seem to be materializing. He believes that the current setup of the Community has come to the end of its usefulness.
Ben discussed why he didn't believe handing back control to Oracle would have any effect. Doing so while Sun was in control would've triggered actions as there was communication between them and the community. As Oracle is not communicating at all, there is doubt that it would make any difference.
Dennis argued that running an open source project independent of Oracle is not an easy or cheap effort.
Motion by Dennis Clarke: that we the OGB collectively resign our OGB status no later than the 31st of July 2010. There is a condition to this motion: Namely that we take this action collectively in order to reset the official organization of the OpenSolaris Community as defined in the Charter. Seconded by Moniak Ghosh.
Discussion then ensued about the merits of the motion. An accompanying statement should also be provided that highlights the OGB's desire to improve the situation:
- OGB has been meeting
- There has been no Oracle liaison - and no communication from Oracle.
- An invitation was extended and accepted by Jeb Dasteel or Oracle to this OGB meeting, and a follow-up e-mail from him was promised. However, neither of these two events has transpired
The motion was put to a vote:
- Joerg Schilling - Abstain
- Neale Ferguson - No
- John Plocher - No
- Simon Phipps- Yes
- Dennis Clarke - Yes
- Peter Tribble - No
- Moniak Ghosh - Yes
Motion is defeated.
Discussion ensued concerning alternatives.
Motion by Neale Ferguson: The OGB is keen to promote the uptake and open development of OpenSolaris and to work on behalf of the community with Oracle, as such the OGB needs Oracle to appoint a liaison by August 16, 2010, who has the authority to talk about the future of OpenSolaris and its interaction with the OpenSolaris community. Otherwise the OGB will take action at the August 23 meeting to trigger the clause in the OGB charter that will return control of the community to Oracle. Seconded by Dennis Clarke.
The motion was put to a vote:
- Joerg Schilling - Yes
- Neale Ferguson - Yes
- John Plocher - Yes
- Simon Phipps- Yes
- Dennis Clarke - Yes
- Peter Tribble - Yes
- Moniak Ghosh - Yes
Motion is carried.
John will communicate this to the community and to Jeb at Oracle. Simon will pass on information to his contacts.
Future Agenda Items
Meetings will be suspended until August 16, unless conversations occur between OGB and Oracle that enables a meeting.
Motion: To adjourn the meeting. Proposed by Simon Phipps and seconded by Dennis Clarke.
