Details of the program - definition of entries, the number of individual prizes, the payout amounts, the method of judging entries, the criteria on which the entries will be judged, the method of submission, recruiting judges, and more - will be announced on January 23. Until then, help us make these decisions by subscribing to the email list and calling in to the meetings noted below.

Proposal

The OpenSolaris community has $175,000 for this program. The planners (you can be a planner) are considering a two-part program:

  • A grant program for undergraduate research. This might be $75,000 total, perhaps 15 $5,000 grants. Note that even though grant winners will be announced in late spring, the grants cannot be paid until August 2008. This program will require a faculty sponsor.
  • A contest. This program will have a few large prizes (the top prize perhaps $25,000 or $30,000) and many smaller prizes. We hope to encourage a wide range of participation. More difficult and innovative submissions will be more likely to win the top awards.

Conference Calls

We will have open discussions and conference calls. After the program launch on January 23, the planning team will continue to meet regularly to monitor and manage the award programs.

Planning calls take place Monday through Friday at 4pm Pacific time.
